National Beach Lifeguard Qualification

The centre runs a series of short courses that lead to an internationally recognised Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) qualification - the National Beach Lifeguard Qualification (NBLQ).

The courses are delivered at the purpose built centre at Lusty Glaze Beach, where professional instructors equip students with the skills required for this highly challenging and rewarding career.

Training involves a series of modules combining practical and theory sessions with an average of three to five hours spent in the water each day. Students must successfully complete each module to gain the qualification.

Successful students will have to demonstrate their knowledge and capabilities in the following core competencies:

- Lifeguard Theory
- Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
- First Aid
- Pool Skills
- Open Water Skills

The theory part of the course covers the role of a lifeguard, beach safety operating procedures, hazard awareness and the importance of accident prevention.

On the practical side, the students will be taught resuscitation techniques, including the use of defibrillators and the administration of oxygen. They also learn how to administer first aid and conduct sea rescues using equipment such as torpedo buoys and rescue paddle boards.

Students are assessed by an independent RLSS qualified assessor who looks for a sound knowledge and understanding of beach lifeguarding principles and safe practices. The qualification is valid for two years.

We have now included the defibrillation course within the NBLQ course. Previously we have charged an additional £50 for this course, but this has now been incorporated within the course cost.
